Michael Stefanelli grew up in Nutley, New Jersey—a town so tight-knit, locals affectionately call it “Planet Nutley.” After an initial career in corporate financial services, Michael Stefanelli found himself looking for a change. “I just didn’t want to be a number anymore,” he says. That turning point became the spark for something much bigger.
In 2014, Stefanelli launched Nutley Neighbors, a community magazine that would become the first of over 40 hyper-local publications he now oversees in New Jersey through Best Version Media including our personal favorite Montclair Neighbors! The mission? To bring neighborhoods closer together—one story at a time.
“I think we’ve forgotten how to connect with our actual neighbors,” he says. “This magazine lands in your mailbox and suddenly, the person walking their dog past your house isn’t a stranger—they’re someone you just read about.”
Fueled by a growing desire for real connection in a digital age, the publications highlight everyday people—coaches, small business owners, long-time residents—with stories that uplift, inform, and inspire.
“There’s always a story worth telling,” Stefanelli says. “And there’s power in being seen.”
What started as a pivot in search of purpose has grown into a movement of storytelling, “intra-preneurship, and community pride. “We’re not chasing headlines—we’re building bridges,” he says.
As towns continue to join the fold, Stefanelli hopes these magazines remain a source of positivity and belonging. “We don’t publish news. We publish connection.”

Exploring Local Stories: A Conversation with Michael Stefanelli, Overseeing 40 NJ Hyper-Local Magazines
In a recent episode of our podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Michael Stefanelli, the publisher of Montclair Neighbors and the New Jersey division leader for Best Version Media (BVM). Michael shared insights into the thriving world of local print media, the importance of community storytelling, and the evolution of his career. Here’s a recap of our conversation.
The Success of Local Magazines
Michael began by discussing the success of local magazines like Montclair Neighbors, which highlight community stories and are supported by local advertising. He emphasized that print media is far from dead; in fact, niche neighborhood publications are thriving. With over 1,400 publications across North America, BVM has proven that there is still a strong demand for local storytelling.
The Power of Community Stories
One of the key aspects of Montclair Neighbors is its focus on local stories. Michael explained that the magazine is not about breaking news but rather about celebrating the people and events that make a community unique. This approach fosters a sense of connection among residents, allowing them to learn more about their neighbors and local businesses.
Michael’s Journey into Publishing
Michael shared his personal journey into the publishing world, which began after he was let go from a corporate job in financial services. Seeking independence and a more fulfilling career, he discovered BVM and saw the potential for a local magazine in his hometown of Nutley. Since then, he has expanded the New Jersey territory to 42 publications, with plans for further growth.
Building a Team and Vision
When launching a new publication, Michael emphasized the importance of building a team that shares a vision for the magazine. While BVM provides support in areas like design and distribution, local publishers are responsible for generating revenue and connecting with their communities. This collaborative approach allows for a more personalized touch in each publication.
The Role of Advertising
Michael discussed the challenges of securing advertising commitments from local businesses. Many business owners are hesitant to invest in print advertising, believing that everyone already knows them. However, Michael explained that consistent branding and visibility in the community are crucial for building trust and awareness among potential customers.
The Future of BVM
Recently, BVM was acquired by HIG Capital, which Michael believes will enhance the company’s ability to serve clients and expand its range of products and services. This acquisition will allow BVM to offer more comprehensive marketing solutions to small businesses, combining the power of print with digital advertising.
The Importance of Positivity
At the heart of Montclair Neighbors is a commitment to positivity. Michael and his team strive to focus on uplifting stories that bring people together, steering clear of divisive topics. This editorial philosophy resonates with readers and advertisers alike, creating a sense of community and connection.
Getting Involved
For those interested in sharing their stories or getting involved with their local BVM publication, Michael encourages reaching out directly through the contact information provided in the magazine. Whether it’s a personal story or a business inquiry, the team is always eager to connect with community members.
