Tom Nussbaum’s art career spans six decades. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Minnesota, he moved to New York City in 1980, where he worked with established artists before finding his own path. Montclair Art Museum Retrospective
Opening September 13, 2025 and running through January 4, 2026, the Montclair Art Museum presents a comprehensive retrospective of Tom’s work. The exhibition traces his evolution from early handmade toys and crafts to his large-scale sculptures and public art projects seen throughout New Jersey.
“Listening” A Journey of Self-Discovery
One of Tom’s most iconic series includes the “Listening” sculpture. In our interview, he describes it as a metaphor for what it feels like to be truly listened to, to find your voice, and to transform through self-discovery.
Public Art Across New Jersey
Tom’s impact can be seen across the state — from the mural in East Orange inspired by his “Boogie Woogie” sculpture to installations in Montclair’s Edgemont Park, NJ Transit stations, and the Wildwoods Convention Center. His work brings art into everyday spaces, making New Jersey more vibrant and connected.
Why Community Matters
As Tom says in the episode:
“An artist cannot survive without community. And New Jersey has been really wonderful in supporting my work in all its aspects.”
This theme of creativity and community runs throughout his career and continues to inspire his work today.
